Senior Software Engineer (Data)

Salary: On application
Location: London / Hybrid

Are you excited by the idea of pushing the boundaries of IoT technology? Do you love making tech work seamlessly? Do you want to contribute to a low carbon future?

At Guru Systems you can be part of a team developing technology that is radically reducing carbon emissions and making energy systems more transparent and lower cost for society.

About the role

Guru Systems collects a billion measurements a month on the performance of domestic heating systems. In this role you will lead the development of products that turn that data into reductions in people’s energy bills.

The product and UX team will work out what the product should do. You will work closely with our Data Engineering team to specify and design Guru’s next generation data processing pipeline, but your ultimate output will be the products that our customers interact with on a day-to-day basis.

Architectural clarity is important to us, and you will design new subsystems and get your peers on-board with your designs. You’ll implement them in a way that is robust and reliable: we expect that you’ve got a solid history of building and operating production systems to draw on.

You will be an escalation point as part of an office-hours-only rotation to investigate and fix issues that occur in production, because we believe that operational experience is a great way to learn how to build systems that are easy to operate.

Essential criteria:

  • A passion for writing great software
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience
  • 3+ years hands on experience with Python, ideally on bigger projects involving over 10 person-years of effort
  • Experience of being a senior software engineer on at least 1 of the projects where you have made a large technical contribution to the solution design
  • 12 months or more experience working on a production data processing / big data system
  • Experience of mentoring and supporting more junior engineers
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentational skills, with the ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English.
  • Strong empathy and the capacity to react calmly and efficiently, even when others are stressed
