My story

I started my career within the access control security industry which was extremely male-dominated.  It was at this point that I discovered that growing up with two older brothers had given me a great deal of resilience. I started in Customer Services and was extremely lucky to end up with a female manager who saw my inner potential and devoted a lot of time to mentoring me to be her predecessor. I learnt so much and developed many skills which then in turn helped me progress into a sales role.

I was fortunate enough to join the energy industry 10 years ago. It was so refreshing for me to join this great industry, and it was also a fantastic time to join the sector as smart metering was developing hugely at the time. I felt empowered as a woman, seen as an equal and encouraged to challenge the boundaries, embrace change and make a difference.

I came into the heat network sector 3 years ago and was able to make use of all the skills that I had developed. I never knew that I would meet such a great group of people trying to make a difference every day, as well as a huge amount of women within the heat network sector. All of these women are a huge support to each other and encourage you to learn, develop and grow – it is a fantastic community.  It is amazing to see such a huge growth of women within the construction and engineering sector and have been fortunate enough to work with many of these including a mentorship from fantastic female figures in the industry.

My advice to any young woman considering a career in heat networks is to do it now! It’s the best time to be involved in a growing sector, with very exciting opportunities. Believe in yourself, you have so much to give to the sector and you can make a huge difference to the future of heat networks.
